In the dark days just before the world is plunged into war, several people board a small steamer bound for the Far East. Each has their own reasons for traveling. Each has their own private concerns and secrets. But the most private and most secret of all may be the mysterious man who keeps to himself in his cabin. Supposedly he is an “inventor,” but just what is he inventing? Is he connected to the unearthly noises that roll off the sea at night? The furtive, shadowy figures that can be glimpsed on deck in the moonlight? The crew members who disappear, leaving only puddles of water behind?
