Playing a role playing game can be tricky enough, but playing a rpg in a setting with an established canon setting can be even trickier.

How do you play when there’s already a set plot? You can do anything from throwing canon to the wind and playing as the main characters in an alternate timeline, or playing as peripheral characters who would never even think to interact with the main plot.
