Gamifying History: Why and How to Bring the Past Alive in Your RPG

SPECIAL NOTE: THIS SEMINAR WILL BE IN THE SAVAGE ALLIANCE ROOM (Mendota 5).
Historical and historical fantasy role-playing has entered a new era you can share with your players. This seminar is about how global history can be used to maximize the fun of your game’s settings, stories, scenarios and inclusiveness. We will use examples to discuss approaches and tools that make history-inspired game development enjoyable and accessible. We’ll also discuss what to look out for: how to avoid imposter syndrome or never knowing enough, quelling player concerns of historical railroading, and incorporating approaches to global history, equity and inclusion. Your discussants are Angus MacDonald and Jim Drake. Angus is the author of the forthcoming Misteries in Misdeeds renaissance historical setting for Savage Worlds. Together with Jim, we are lifelong GM’s who have been running global history-based RPG’s at cons throughout the Midwest for most of a decade.
